Regent's College Students Attend the NMUN Conference, New York 2008

Students from Regent's College School London recently attended the National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference.  The conference is the culmination of yearlong preparation with meetings, research, writing and fund-raising.Model United Nations

The Conference began with speeches in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations by both Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and H.E. Dr. Srgjan Kerim, President of the 62nd Session of the General Assembly.

The UN leader congratulated participants on arriving as student delegates and leaving as ambassadors representing the UN by building a better understanding of the organization at a crucial time. He also encouraged delegates to continue their support as a catalyst for change. He added that as leaders of the future, students can come up with innovative approaches to help confront the challenges facing the global community.

In his address, Ban Ki-moon also detailed the important work being done now with numerous UN initiatives including Millennium Development Goals, numerous peace-keeping missions worldwide, substantial Human Rights work and advancing global common goals including climate change, health, counter-terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation.

" NMUN delivers a feeling of camaraderie and hope to all who attend, " says Erin Kennedy 2008 NMUN Secretary-General. " After all, where else can a university student feel like an actual diplomat, surrounded by like-minded people from all over the world?  Our venue allows students from every corner of the globe to come together and critically examine issues that affect each and every one of us. "

The delegation from Regents College London led by Team Leader Assaad Khourchid attended representing the country of Swaziland.  The RCL students encountered their peers from around the world who shared their passion on issues like climate change and nonproliferation, debating proposals put forth to address these issues from the perspective of diplomats of their assigned country. The RCL students participated with enthusiasm in the various forums and caucuses and represented their College very well.

NMUN New York 2008 brings more than 4,000 delegates from five continents to New York City each year. The conference focus includes more than 20 committees as well as a Security Council for unaffiliated delegates. This year its sponsor, the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA), celebrates 40 years of experience-based educational programs that further the understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international problems.

The NCCA Board of Directors President is the Hon. Joseph H. Melrose, Jr., who served the U.S. Department of State for three decades in the Foreign Service and has served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Delegation to the 61st and 62nd UN General Assemblies. The NCCA is a nonprofit organization and non-governmental organization affiliated with the UN Department of Public Information.
