New Venture Management Student Award

Regent’s College’s International Visiting Professor, Professor Jonathan Liu and Academic Director, Dr Richard Gregson are proud to announce the winner of Regent’s College Houghton Mifflin’s Best Student Award in Managing New Ventures for Autumn 2008.

The award recognizes the aspirations and passion that students have in developing their ideas and turning them into sustainable ventures that benefit society and individuals as a whole.

Shruti Rathod receives the Managing New Ventures Award

The award winner, Shruti Rathod said, “Managing New Ventures is one of the very rare modules that require an efficient combination of theory and practice. The very hands-on nature of the module gives it an edge over the rest of the theory based modules. I gradually learnt the creative element of the business environment as the module progressed. My interest in the subject was developed further in the team assignment. The group work for the module was far the best group work I've had at Regent’s College. The teacher's support during the classes and also outside of regular class hours has been phenomenal. It was like being part of a small family."

Celebrating Students Achievements

The award celebrates the achievements that students have to make in developing themselves and the hard work that they have put into making the module a success.  The module enables students to explore the challenges and processes involved in the creation of new ventures.  Students are required to apply analytical and technical skills that they have learnt from the module and attempt to use them in a practical setting.

The award is made to the student who achieves the highest grades in the assessment process and by working in a team of students developing a bespoke merchandise product or service idea.  The assessment process involves presenting the idea and answering questions from a panel of external industrial experts in a Dragon’s Den format.

The panel assesses the presentation and rates the venture idea as they would do in real life.  This brings realism into the classroom and enables students to gain experience of presenting in competitive and sometimes hostile business environments to which they would not otherwise have exposure.

The Award

The award is sponsored by Cengage and Tom Owen, Field Sales Representative, said that “Cengage having taken over Houghton Mifflin continues the relationship with Regent's College as sponsors of the award because the module meets Cengage’s goals of being a global provider of learning materials and facilitators of knowledge transfer”.

The award is made annually and allows students to be creative and think out of the box by applying what they have learned both from the module as well as from other modules they have covered at the College.

"My MA has benefited me in a number of ways. The many different cultures represented by students on the programme, their ways of working and their lifestyles has given me a broader perspective on the world, which I have found useful in my consultancy job."
