Programme Themes
This programme has five themes which are reflected in
all the modules through their content, teaching methods and style
of delivery.
Internationalism
Internationalism means that we take a global perspective in
terms of programme content, we focus on helping you
to develop your cross cultural capabilities and we aim to
help you develop as a responsible global citizen.
Internationalism is built into this programme through the content
of the modules; the international experience of the teaching staff,
external practitioners and industry experts who contribute to the
programme, and the international environment offered at the
College.
Professionalism and employability
Professionalism and employability run through the heart of the
programme and are considered in every module. You will be
encouraged to use this opportunity to build your own network
through attendance at industry events, membership of professional
bodies and contact with fellow professionals.
Technology
Effective use of technology is one of the key strategic issues
currently facing international travel and tourism organisations and
industry feedback tells us that many companies lack managers with
appropriate technological skills. Consequently this programme
includes consideration of technology, its use and impact, in every
module. However you won’t simply be learning about technology in
the abstract – you will be using it.
The online learning elements of the programme will give you the
opportunity to improve your own digital literacy and become a more
proficient user of technologies such as social media, cloud
computing services, communication and collaboration tools.
Additionally you will learn about technologies particularly
relevant to certain areas of travel and tourism, such as CRM
systems on the Strategic Marketing Management module, reservation
systems on the Managing Travel and Tourism Operations module, and
so on.
Ethics and sustainability
International travel and tourism organisations are under
pressure to address issues such as sustainability, impact, ethics
and corporate social responsibility. Rather than covering these
topics in a stand-alone module we have threaded them through
every module on the programme to ensure you are fully versed
in the ethical and environmental issues facing managers in all
functional areas of the business.
Critical and reflective thinking
As a manager within the international travel and tourism
industry you have a responsibility to your customers, your staff
and other stakeholders to think critically about all aspects of
your business and to reflect on the effect your decisions can have
on others. The ability to think critically and reflectively can not
only help you to become a much more effective manager but also help
you become a more effective learner. Consequently both these key
skills are also threaded through every module.
