With the advent of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the UK’s sports industry is expected to have one of the highest growth rates of all major countries worldwide.

Gold Sports TrophyAccording to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the UK sports industry grew by 23% between 2006 and 2007 alone; they believe that the UK will outperform the US sports industry – a more mature market - by 2012. The Olympics itself will contribute an estimated £2 billion.

Such dramatic growth means that there is increasing demand for competent, well-equipped managers who combine core business skills with specialised knowledge of this fast moving and competitive industry.

Flexible Career Progression

This exciting pathway provides a sound basis for a career in management within the sports industry. It allows you to gain a thorough grounding in core business and management areas highly valued by the leisure industry as a whole, allowing flexibility of career progression.

It provides the opportunity to explore specialised areas in corporate sports management through academic study and professional practice.

You will take focused academic modules including sports psychology; sport’s history and place in society; managing club finances; income generation and sponsorship; and global marketing of sports and entertainment. Your Work Placement in semester 4 will allow you to gain valuable ‘hands-on’ experience in a specific area of your choice. Finally, your Planning Project/Dissertation in semesters 5 and 6 will also allow you to further explore an area of personal interest in sports management.

  • Ability to analyse and evaluate the business environment and its impact on the leisure management industry
  • Critical understanding of the development of knowledge in the field of Leisure Management and the specialist area of Sports Management
  • Research and problem solving abilities related to methods of acquisition, interpretation and analysis of information appropriate to the context of Leisure Management
  • Critical awareness of the moral, ethical, environmental and legal issues which underpin best practice in Leisure Management
