Course Aims
The module aims to:
Equip the students with an understanding of the role, levels and functions of management;

Provide the students with a basis of knowledge that will support their further learning in the School’s BA (Hons) Programme and in the Global Business Management degree pathway;

Identify the challenges which confront management;

Introduce management models used for the analysis and evaluation of those challenges;

Explain the interrelationship between management and ethical issues in both commercial and the wider social domain;

Enable the students to apply their knowledge and understanding to existing organisations;

Encourage the students to demonstrate analytical and practical skills in problem-solving activities with case studies.

 

Course Content
The skills assessed during the course of this module are:

Written communication – the ability of students to express themselves clearly and concisely in English on written assignments and final examinations, even though English may not be the first language.

Oral communication – assessed in group presentations, and also through participation in the group presentations and other activities during the class.

Teamwork – assessed during group presentations and participation in other group activity.

Problem-solving – assessed mainly on student abilities to ability to address and analyse problems during the Learning Shop.

Data collection and analysis – assessed through student abilities to collect and analyse information from a variety of sources for application to assignments.

Learning OutcomesOn completion of this module, students should be able to:

LO1  Identify the functions of management and show understanding of them;

LO2  Show broad knowledge of each of the individual features of management, including the management of people in the work place;

LO3  Recognise managerial challenges;

LO4  Correctly identify suitable models for the resolution of those challenges;

LO5  Display analytical skills to solve managerial problems identified in case studies;

LO6  Show awareness of the importance of ethical issues to corporate management, and be able to evaluate their potential impact upon corporate managerial strategy;

LO7  Demonstrate good understanding of the contents of the module and utilise it in the design and content of the individual assignment.   

 

Presentation
Students are expected to attend all the classes (4 hours) each week, as learning abilities are strongly linked to attendance.  The classes will be divided into two, with the first two sessions devoted to the lecture, the second two (the Learning Shop) to practical work by groups of students analysing organisations represented in case studies.
A wide variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, workshops and group exercises will be used to enhance the quality of the students’ learning experiences in the module. The module will, through the use of case studies, explore global management issues that impact on the smooth running of a company business. Learning Journals will also be used to facilitate student efforts to improve their own independent learning efforts.
