Why should I choose this pathway?

This exciting pathway provides a sound basis for a career in management within the tourism industry. It allows you to gain a thorough grounding in core business and management areas highly valued by the leisure industry as a whole, allowing flexibility of career progression. It provides the opportunity to explore specialised areas in tourism management through academic study and professional practice.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) 2009 Economic Impact Research survey, the travel and tourism economy is forecast to grow by 4% per annum in real terms over the next ten years. By 2019, it states, travel and tourism will account for 275 million jobs, representing 8.4% of total employment across the world.

The Olympic Games - London 2012

London is now under the spotlight as it prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games; it is anticipated that this event will provide a huge boost to the tourist economy of London and the UK as a whole. This major event provides a highly topical backdrop to the study of tourism management in London, and offers you an exciting opportunity to undertake detailed research into the Games as a dissertation topic or indeed potentially as a focus for your Work Placement.

You will take focused academic modules including culture and tourism; destination management; contemporary issues in leisure and tourism; and global marketing of tourism and travel. Your Work Placement in semester 4 will allow you to gain valuable ‘hands-on’ experience in a specific area of your choice. Finally, your Planning Project/Dissertation in semesters 5 and 6 will also allow you to further explore an area of personal interest in tourism management.

Key Skills

  • Critical understanding of the development of knowledge in the field of Leisure Management and the specialist area of Tourism Management
