My Gateway Experience in Regent's Business School London, England

Spring Semester 2007

By Josephine Lee – Senior at Hawaii Pacific University, USA

josephine leeI have attended Regent's Business School London RBSL during the past Spring semester of 2007 and to sum up my entire experience in London in written words would be an impossible task.  I will attempt to do my best in the next few paragraphs below.

Over the course of the past five months, I can honestly claim that I have seen a lot, learnt a lot and grown a lot. Regent's Business School as a small business school in London, has a lot to offer both academically and personally.  In addition to the School, London as a location, is a prime setting for any students to gain both a cultural and global learning experience.

Due to its small size, RBSL is able to create an intimate and personal learning environment for its students.  The lecturers at this Business School are well qualified, experienced and equipped with an extraordinary amount of information waiting to be imparted to students.  Their personal dedication and care towards their teaching, leaves us with the desire to want to learn more. Other facilities of Regent's College include a career service center, several computer rooms (albeit, they can get quite hot during the summer), a library, a large cafeteria that offers a selection of healthy and delicious foods (I have never ate so many times at a school cafeteria before) and a student bar!  Moreover, the School on its Regent's College location boasts a beautiful campus that is located within Regent's Park, which (in my opinion) is the most beautiful park in London. It is within walking distance to Baker Street, the home of Sherlock Holmes who is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Although RBSL is just one of the many schools within Regent's College, you will find yourself mingling with students from the other Schools as well.  You may find that the business students from European Business School and RBSL have an ongoing ‘rivalry’ but this competitive attitude only exists in a good-nature and joking manner. Students mix well all round including those from Regent's American College London (RACL),  and Webster University. It is like a big global family.

Of course, apart from the College itself, London also has a lot to offer as a great metropolis.  As the financial center of the world, students will no doubt be able to meet and connect themselves with many professionals that are working in this fast-paced city center.  You should definitely study hard at RBSL, but also take the time to explore the historical and cultural sites of London and the United Kingdom.  I, myself, have thoroughly enjoyed going to theatre shows, musicals, museums or even just taking walks down in Soho, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Knightsbridge.  As one of the first group of Gateway Study Abroad students coming into RBSL, (I came from my home university – Hawaii Pacific University, USA) we were privileged to have received complimentary London sightseeing BUS tour tickets which gave us a good overview of London city.

Overall, the experience in London has been phenomenal.  I would not have adapted so easily without the help of RBSL Gateway Programme Manager Eric Chan, who made my stay at RBSL extremely welcoming.  I also want to extend my thanks to the faculty and staff of RBS, in particular Raihan Alavi – The Registrar, Mariona Centellas –Careers / Alumni Manager, Dr Tommie Anderson-Jaquest – Head of Undergraduates Programmes and Dr Richard Gregson – Academic Director, and too the students of RBS and EBSL.

Nevertheless, having said all these wonderful things, the bottom-line is, the RBSL Gateway study abroad experience depends solely on us: to what lengths will we push ourselves to experience new cultures, friends and innovative ideas will determine the success of our own learning experiences.  With this in mind, I wish all future Gateway Study Abroad students an enjoyable and learning experience at RBS London!

"After doing my first degree in Law, I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain which way to go and not knowing what to do. Doing my MA at RBS London has now opened up many options.  We undertook a really good Skills Programme which has helped me understand more about myself and given me skills which I have used in job interviews."
