My Gateway Experience in Regents Business School London,
England
Spring Semester 2007
By Sergio Moreno – Senior at Alliant International
University, San Diego, USA
It’s funny. Last night I was having this very
conversation with Byron. I told him that this experience has
changed everything about me and has given me a sense of freedom
beyond my expectations. I was told by many that gateway study
abroad would change everything about my personality and my
perspectives of this world. I was will aware of that but
nobody told me how much I would come to love it and no one knew I
would call England my home. Many will ask me why the sudden
change of heart and how could it have happened so quickly. My
answer will be ‘it's London!’ There is no doubt that the
largest city in Europe presents a number of opportunities and gives
you a global perspective of life and what it can create. From
an urban point of view this is a Mecca of culture and people that
can greatly alter the world in every sense possible.
Coming to RBS London and living here on campus in Regent's Park
is a profound impact on how you live and breathe the diversity of
this school and merge of the many cultures and people who come from
a variety of backgrounds. From the very first moment I made
contacts with fellow students who had a great deal of history to
share and I with then. My home institution Alliant
International University USA prides itself in the diversity of its
campus and the up-to-date business programs that give a real and
international global view that is unmatched in America. It’s
for that reason that I chose Alliant and it makes prefect sense
that RBS London and Alliant have formed a partnership together to
share this fabulous Gateway Program together. As both institutions
follow the same principles… to shape and develop business leaders
who are ready to provide an effective business environment; an
environment that revolves around an international and diverse
learning process that yields a proactive business world which
renders benefits beyond financial objectives.
RBS London
is a family and everyone (staff, administrators (even the academic
director) and lecturers) knows your name. The instructors and
staffs take time to listen and actively help you in any way, shape
or form. The environment that surrounds the school is warm and
welcoming from the very start. My first impression of class
is that they are small and interactive. The instructors are
clear and to the point of who they are and how their business
experience and developments are going to teach you the real
application of business today in the UK, Europe and the
world. The course objectives are clear and concise and
deliver an informative and truly interesting subject that gives you
the drive to learn and develop productive and proactive
work.
The UK seems to have a few more holidays then America and RBS
London awards a longer Spring Break! This is at first
interrupted as fun, fun, fun! But it gives you the
opportunity to travel, see and learn about Europe or spend your
time to absorb historical knowledge of London. An experience
beyond words, I personally was able to travel to Paris, Rome,
Florence, Venice and Barcelona during the two week break.
Thus going to places that I had always read and dreamed about, in
the two weeks that I was able to tour Europe I learned that the
world truly functions differently. A two hour plane ride
takes you to a different city, region or country with different
cultures and way of living. It then becomes your mission to
adjust to the language, people and environment, as your ability to
adjust and redirect your objectives will award you a pleasant
trip.
I believe
that the culture I was exposed to in RBS London before my trip was
a good warm up of what to expect for the rest of Europe.
Which may seem simple at first and unnoticed but you quickly come
to appreciate once you set foot in a country where you do not
understand a word they speak. Also the academic challenges
that are set in class and the group works that instructors like to
practice at first may seem to be a nuisance quickly becomes a way
of growing with people and making contacts with people you would
have normally not spoke to. It’s these educational practices
that RBS London conducts on a daily bases that creates a
interactive network of students who find and develop successful
friends, business and social relationships that yield benefits in
the future.
I have made the most proactive and life alternating choice in my
life coming to RBS London. As it has given me an inspiration
to growth, learn, meet and travel our planet. This new chain
of thought has given me the opportunity to develop new goals and
objectives in my educational, personal, social and professional
life. Ending my BA (Hons) here at RBS London has truly made
me feel like I have accomplished an academic career with true
meaning and success. Thank you RBS London.
